Project
Dynamic digital musical score system that adapts to performers in real-time.
01
Learning objective
TapTheScore introduces children to the relationship between written notation and sound through a tangible paper interface. Touching a printed note immediately plays the corresponding pitch.
02
Interaction
Each note acts as a capacitive sensor made from conductive ink. The score preserves the familiar appearance and physical qualities of paper while behaving like an electronic musical instrument.
03
Fabrication
The paper and cardboard layers were designed together so that printed staves, note cut-outs and conductive traces align. A Cricut Maker was used to manufacture the score structure.
04
Electronics
Conductive traces are connected to an Adafruit Circuit Playground through a custom contact system. A CircuitPython program detects touches and generates the corresponding notes with selectable timbres.
